Pirelli P Zero Run Flat (PZ4) tires are Max Performance Summer tires derived from Pirelli’s Formula 1 experience and developed for use as Original Equipment on the BMW 7 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class and MINI Clubman, with select replacement tire sizes also included in the lineup. P Zero Run Flat (PZ4) tires are designed for the drivers of sports car, sport coupes and high-performance luxury sedans and provide the convenience of temporary extended mobility in the event of complete air pressure loss. Pirelli’s warranty does not cover tires that develop compound cracking due to use in ambient temperatures below 45° Fahrenheit (7° Celsius), so the P Zero Run Flat (PZ4), like all summer tires, is not intended to be driven in near-freezing temperatures, through snow or on ice.

The P Zero Run Flat (PZ4) utilizes a special high silica content summer-only rubber compound that is molded into an asymmetric tread design focused on comfort, low rolling resistance, low noise and lateral hydroplaning resistance. Wide, circumferential grooves and lateral notches are utilized for efficient water evacuation at speed or while braking to improve resistance to longitudinal hydroplaning.

The tire’s internal structure includes twin steel belts reinforced by a hybrid nylon and Kevlar ZeroDegree cap ply. Based on the desired performance characteristics of the Original Equipment application, the tire casing will be two-ply polyester or one- or two-ply rayon, with either symmetric or asymmetric construction. With many combinations of material and orientation available during development, tire designers have the ability to fine-tune the tire’s internal construction to further match the personality of the automobile for which it is engineered.

The sidewalls of the P Zero Run Flat (PZ4) feature additional reinforcement to provide self-supporting run-flat capabilities of up to 50 mph for up to 50 miles (80 km/h for 80 km). Due to these restrictions, it is imperative drivers be notified when a loss in tire pressure occurs and requires the vehicle be equipped with a tire pressure monitoring system (TPMS) to detect and signal tire pressure changes.

Though they cannot be labeled as run-flat tires, tires branded with MOExtended or MOE on their sidewalls offer run-flat-like characteristics by delivering limited temporary extended mobility after a puncture results in complete loss of air pressure. Because MOExtended or MOE tires do not have the same speed and distance endurance of conventional run-flat tires, they should not be substituted in any situation where a conventional run-flat tire is required.   1. These came on my X3 35i MSport as OE. Not a whole lot I can say about the PZeros. They’re pretty much as expected. Good dry traction, pretty good wet traction, good handling. And the typical run-flat negatives; harsh ride, lots of noise. What surprised me about them is the 320 treadwear rating. I had PZeros in the past and the rating was significantly lower. That said, I fully expect to have to replace them before I turn in the lease. Whether or not they get PZeros back will depend on whats available at the time and pricing, because these are extremely overpriced tires.

  2. Embarrassingly after only 9000 miles, thread completely gone. Very poor on wet road. OEM Dunlop SM GT DSST pulled 25k driving with more aggressive driving. On a good side, lot quieter and more comfortable/softer than Dunlop.

  3. This tire offers great traction but Mercedes should be more reasonable than equipping a car with a summer only tire that has a 280 treadwear rating. Tires lasted all of 7500 miles before the tread was shot and the tires were out of round. I thought I had bent rims the noise was so loud. I’m not sure I understand the logic of putting these on as an OEM tire as it seems like everyone else is only getting 7-10K out of them.

  4. I had a left front tire & wheel that sustained damage as a result of a pothole, which means a full 4 tire replacement. I went with replacing i.e., OEM Pirelli PZERO run flats. SAVE your money! By far there is nothing good about the PZERT tire. Performance is moderate-worst of all is the tread wear was almost over night. What makes even more devastating is that my car Mercedes C300 Coupe w/sport package was garaged most of the time so 2,000 miles is being generous, my wife and I car pooled most of the time. I replaced the tires with Yokohama Advent and the difference is startling. I have not put them to the test performance wise, but road noise is slight at best compared to the PZERO. Run flats in general, and I went through 2 sets are worthless. Why, even with a puncture in the tread of the tire, which is where it better be because a run flat won’t survive a pothole; you still must get your tire(s) fixed or repaired regardless. Have a safe and better ride, avoid run flats-especially PZERO.

  5. My X5 came with these OE on a staggered 20″ setup. Summer only. Had the car 5 years and this is my second set. They are definitely precise and provide crisp steering response. The tire noise isn’t noticeable when new, but as the tire wears, they get a bit louder. You get a firm ride because they are runflats and on this vehicle, a 20″ tire doesn’t have a lot of sidewall. I got about 12,000 miles out of the first set and will get about the same with these. Seems like that’s pretty common for a summer only performance tire and see the same comments on the Michelin Pilot Sports about treadlife. They are definitely not suitable for winter driving and we use snows as soon as the temps get below 50. If you want a summer performance runflat and are OK with the limited treadlife, this has been good for us. May try an all-season next time as they have a better treadlife warranty.
